Greenisland Boys Tournaments
A Diary of Greenisland Under 13 Tour
Haarlem Easter Cup in Holland 2006

Thursday 13th April 2006,
The party meet at Belfast International airport 7-15am for a 9-40am direct flight to Amsterdam. Some of the boys sneak away to Burger King for a healthy breakfast of chips and burgers at 8-15am. (Whats the world coming to?) For the rest a coffee to waken up before the usual suspects get stopped by security as we go through to the departure lounge.
Easyjet flight departs on time and we arrive in Amsterdam at 12 noon local time. After a short walk to the coach pick-up point we are all staggered when this posh double decker coach arrives to collect us. B E U K Coach Company obviously knew in advance how professional Greenisland Boys are and sent Ajax Amsterdams coach to transport us. Are destination 35 miles south west of Amsterdam in the town of Wassenaar and our base for the next 6 days was within a Theme Park called Duinrell that had two parks. One indoor and an outdoor rides type park. It also meant we were away from all the hassle and the reporters etc who stayed in the Haarlem area to cover the tournament.. Ha Ha!

A free day for the boys to discover the area and to relax and enjoy each others company. The boys certainly enjoyed the outdoor rides although most were soaked from head to toe by the time they had finished. Problem was they went straight to the park in there Greenisland clothes which needed several hours in the tumble dryers to dry off. Anyway the other park was a large indoor water slides facility which should carry a health warning speaking from experience as the speed you travel down takes your breath away. Matty Stewart said as he couldnt swim very well he would not be able to go on all the slides but I told him not to worry about swimming because the fall would kill you anyway.
Thursday evening we found a lovely Italian restaurant in the village a 5 minute walk from the park with all 21 people on the trip enjoying meals of pasta, spaghetti, home made pizzas and garlic bread.( No chips here Matty T). After which we walked back to the Hostel for our first nights accommodation. Some spent a few hours at the tumble dryers trying to get clothes dried but without success. The top floor was taken over by us and 5 people crammed into each bedroom, thankfully this was for one night only and more importantly no snoring was reported.

Friday 14th April,
After a continental breakfast we boarded the coach at 9-30am for the trip to Amsterdam Arena and Ajaxs training ground. On arrival at the Arena we walked the short distance to the world renowned De Toekomst the future training facilities for Ajax youth teams. Their under 18 team were training and Andrew Mitchell commented but they dont do anything different in training than us, well their training must be poor or else our training is good then, was my reply. A bit quicker and sharper though than we would do it to be honest. One observation though was when you see everybody train in the same gear it really looks the part. Hint for the future at Greenisland.
Before we started the tour of the ground we sat outside in the sunshine and enjoyed our packed lunch beautifully prepared by Romayne and Carol. Fresh rolls with ham, chicken, tuna or cheese along with apples, oranges, bananas, drinks and chocolate bars were all eaten within minutes. The two Ronnies, Matty Thompson and Matty Johnston unselfishly feed the birds on the main road or were they wanting to see how quick they moved before a car came? Then we had Patrick (could you peel my orange please because I dont know how). No comment!!!!!
Onto the tour and what a stadium with the actual pitch a few levels up from the road and 52,000 all seated with a roof to keep out any inclement weather. The boys all got their photos taken on the pitch which was like a bowling green and not one blade of grass missing and this at the end of the season! From the pitch we then moved into the seating areas but Colin Sewell reckoned that we should have had a rope to reach the top deck of the seating it was so steep. We also went into the press room and the not so shy sat on the same seats where they do the post match interviews with the players and managers. Before we left the stadium they let us into the control room where the police monitor the entire Arena on CCTV because Holland has a terrible problem with violence during games. Then onto the Ajax Museum which the adults enjoyed more than the boys because we could remember the European Cup wins from the 1970s and mid 1990s. (Well some remembered the 1970s.)

The club shop was the last stop before playing football outside the ground then boarding the coach and returning to Duinrell at 4-30pm. On arrival we then moved all our gear to the wee houses or Duingalows as the Dutch call them for the reminder of the trip. These are small 3 bed roomed mobile homes but tidy and all 4 where beside each other which meant everyone could run into each others houses when they wanted. At 6pm we got down to business with a training session held in the park grounds. Not quite Amsterdam Arena but when you have all good players they can play on any surface. That was after Ronnie chased all the ducks of the pitch. I always said we had a few quackers in our team
After training the whole party headed into town for an evening meal. This time to a local restaurant with mixed grills, pasta and a few home made chips the order of the day. Then straight back for an early night as the tournament started the next morning. No early night for the ladies along with Davy Woods and Jamsie who made the lunches for everyone.
Saturday 15th April,
Depart 8-30am by coach to Haarlem for the opening group matches. Our under 14 section was to be played at the Onze Gezellen pitches with 5 groups of 5 teams competing. The coach journey took 20 minutes longer than expected and as a result we only arrived 10 minutes before our first game was due to start.

We played a Dutch team first called Alliance 22 on the Main Pitch No1 which suited us because of its large width and length. Within 6 minutes we were 2 up with goals from Josh McIlroy and Matthew Stewart and more importantly the boys were excellent, passing the ball from the defence through midfield and linking up to the front players. We had stressed how important it was to start well, but we couldnt in our wildest dreams have imagined that we would have been this good. Everyone got involved in the play and the movement of the ball was top notch. The 20 minute game finished 2-0 but with better finishing (we hit the woodwork four times) we could have won more convincingly. Who needs a proper warm-up Gills!
Between each game we had a 30 minute rest and next up was an English team called Thomas Telford Boys Club. We used our new sky blue tops in this game because Telford played in a claret kit similar to ours. Again we started well and dominated the opening 10 minutes without scoring. Some of the 1 and 2 touch football was a joy to watch and finally we got the goals that our play deserved. Within a four minute spell Josh, Michael McKee and Matthew Stewart had all scored to calm the nerves then in the last few minutes Matthew Johnston added a fourth. The final score 4-0 and in the words of a Dutch committee member who watched the game a wonderful, wonderful team performance with everyone comfortable on the ball and everyone passing and moving to support. These were his exact words not mine.
Thirty minutes break before we played another Dutch team VVH Velserbroek. They were strong, physical and tried to play on the counter attack. This was why we came here to play against teams from different Countries and with different styles of play. Overall a frustrating game because of the amount of stoppages but to be fair the referee needed eyes in the back of his head with the antics employed by Velserbroek. At least he spotted their centre forward hitting Curtis Woods on the back on his head and showed him a red card. They also sneaked another player on during the arguing and this was only noticed a few minutes later. (Well spotted Davy Woods) We had the ball in the net when Josh side footed home but the ref had whistled saying the ball went out as Michael crossed it. The game finished 0-0 but another clean sheet and 7 points from 9 meant we only needed to draw our last game to reach the A Finals on Sunday.
The opposition in the last group game was from Scotland. Milton Rovers a well known boys club with a big reputation were are opponents. The problem now was could we get 11 fit players on the pitch? We only had 13 players in the squad but injuries had taken Matty Johnston and Matty Stewart out and several others were struggling also. However every boy produced a performance that made all who watched proud. They let the ball do the work on the big pitch and at times played keep ball to frustrate Milton Rovers. Then after some nice passing from Richard Glover, Andrew Mitchell, Craig Cooling and Ross Davison the ball was played through for Michael McKee who raced past their centre half and fired a 20 yard left foot shot high into the net (Geoff Hurst 1966 World Cup Final for those who remember) what a goal and more importantly gave everyone a lift when tiredness was setting in. A few minutes later Josh McIlroy was on hand to score a second after their goalkeeper failed to hold Michael McKees effort and this goal secured a terrific 2-0 win. A great achievement by all the 13 boys who played and a great day in the history of Greenisland Boys F C.

Group A Table.

We returned to Duinrell tired but delighted and relaxed by going to the water parks or some watched the football on cable TV in the Duingalows. Well the boys and coaches relaxed as Carol, Romayne, Jamsie and David went into town and got the food in for everyones late breakfast on Sunday. By winning the group we could have a lie- in on Sunday as the A-Finals did not start until 2-30pm.
Saturday evening we celebrated by going to our favourite Italian restaurant for Pasta, Spaghetti or Pizzas all baked as you ordered them. We even let the boys have ice-cream (standards dropped here) before walking back to our wee homes and watching the football on TV. (Saturday nights never change no matter were you are) Thankfully some boys only used one pair of boots on Saturday so I only had 16 pair to clean tonight.
Sunday 16th April,
Our first lie- in and the reward for reaching the A Finals was appreciated by everyone. Since we arrived on Thursday we had been on the go none stop everyday so a 9-30am lie-in was great for the boys. We all relaxed before getting a cooked breakfast of scrambled eggs, beans and toast. (We regretted the beans later on the coach home) Thanks to Jamsie, Romayne, Carol and David for breakfast. Team meeting at 12 noon before the coach journey at 1pm to Haarlem.
We had won Group A on Saturday and therefore we were in Group AA which consisted of the Group C and E winners along with the runners up from Groups B and D. First up was AFC Dronfield who were connected to Sheffield Utd but sorry to say were not in our class as we dominated from the first whistle until the last. The boys also showed tremendous patience because we had created at least 6 or 7 good chances and missed them all. However they still passed the ball from the back and with Andrew Dickey always throwing the ball out rather than kicking it we kept possession of the ball. With 7 minutes remaining we got our reward when from another Andrew Mitchell corner Matty Stewart attacked the near post area to back heel the ball home,1-0 and the only goal of a game which we had dominated.
A great start and next up another English team but this time from London. Villacourt Rovers were the opposition and a well organised team with players on the books of West Ham and Charlton. This was one of our best performances of the tournament as we knocked the ball about all over the pitch using both wings and the movement of the ball from everyone was superb. The game resembled an 11 v 11 attack against defence as the boys tried everything to break down a well drilled defence. We had shots cleared off the line hit the woodwork on two occasions and their G/K who resembled Davy Crockett at the Alamo pulled of several super saves to keep the score at 0-0. Andrew Dickey never had one shot to save in the game such was our dominance. A draw was the outcome but we were all proud of the boys performance as again they continued to pass the ball when lesser teams would have gone the more direct route as they tried to get that goal which their play had deserved. However 4 points out of 6 and a good start anyway.
Both AFC Dronfield and Villacourt had warned us about our next opponents H F C from Holland. (This showed the Great Spirit which all the teams from the UK and Ireland had for each other) and its not everyday you can say that about sporting teams. During the 10 minute break, so much for 30 minutes between matches now, we warned the boys not to get involved, to keep there discipline and let their feet do the talking. If there was going to be any trouble then Keith would go on first to get hit, before Colin and I in that order would come on. Ha Ha only joking Keith your English after all so you would have been last on.
The game started and we had an opening 6 minutes that you can only dream about. On 3 minutes a near post corner from Andrew and Matty Stewart attacked the ball to score in of his backside. (We have such talent they can score from all parts of their body). Straight from the kick off H F C casually played the ball back to their G/K and Michael McKee who had chased and ran his socks off all day intercepted the ball to coolly take it around the G/K and shoot high into the net 2-0 after 4 minutes what a start! Two became three moments later when after some great build up play on the left side Matty Stewart applied a clinical finish from 10 yards. Who said we had to watch ourselves because A F C could not get the ball from us and with everyones confidence sky high and all wanting the ball we totally outclassed are Dutch opponents.
( Andrew Dickey sat on a deck chair smoking a pipe on his 18 yard box admiring the football his team mates from Barcelona, sorry Greenisland U13s were producing). The saying Dutch total football certainly applied here but by a wee team from Greenisland against a team from Holland in there own back yard. Back to the game and 3-0 became 4 as Blaine (40 Euros) McKenna finished of another super move from the back 4 into midfield out wide to Ross Davison who whipped a super ball across goal for Blaine to score. Unfortunately some challenges started to get nasty on the boys as the Dutch team lost their discipline and began to play like an Italian team from the 70s with some tackles coming in at chest height. The ref gave yellow cards out like confetti but these boys from Greenisland showed how professional they were by not getting involved and rubbed salt in by scoring a 5th goal when from a beautifully flighted Craig Cooling free kick, Matty Thompson rose like a salmon, as Colin put it, to make it 5-0 with a downward header back across goal into the far corner. Matty Stewart almost got his hat-trick when from an 18 yard left foot rocket, he hit the underside of the crossbar and came out. Final Score 5-0 but for quick 1 and 2 touch football all over the pitch along with flashes of skill in the final third the boys surely gave the best performance of the tournament by any team.
Again only a 10 minute break before are last group game but a draw in this would be enough to go through to the Final. The game was against Glouthaune Utd from Cork in Ireland and a win for them would send them into the final. Like yesterday we struggled to get 11 fit players onto the pitch but a goal from Michael McKee on 5 minutes after Blaines shot had been had been blocked on the line gave us some breathing space. As the injuries and tiredness started to take there toll we started to struggle and if truth be told never put 2 passes together in the entire game. The Cork lads sensed this and started to pump long balls forward and put pressure on our defence. As soon as we got the ball we gave it away and invited trouble but somehow we hung on until 2 minutes from the end .Glouthaune Utd had caused us trouble with there height and physical presence, then from a corner we failed to clear and after Andrew Dickey had pushed the first effort onto the crossbar only to see another player follow up and shoot home despite another valiant effort from Andrew to keep it out. 1-1 and for the first time we looked like being beaten. But somehow like a heavyweight boxer in the last round of a punishing fight we hung on for the last 2 minutes and amazingly we had reached the final.
We came to this tournament not knowing what to expect but secretly I knew we would do well in Europe if we got a bit of time and space on the ball to play the type of football that this team was capable of. To reach the final was a tremendous achievement by every boy but richly deserved as their performances had been top quality accept for the last group game but that was more to do with exhaustion than anything else.

Group AA Final Table.

Greenisland 4 2 0 2 7 1 8

All afternoon the tournament was playing catch up because the B finals that were played in the morning ran on for 30 minutes more than expected so the rest periods during each game got less and less. There were 2 groups in the A finals but unfortunately for us we were last to play and therefore we had the last group game also. Again before the final we only got a 10 minute break but are opponents Husie I F from Sweden got 40 minutes break. This time was spent by all the adults trying to get the boys legs loosened up. The biggest problem for some was their weary minds as most had played in all 8 group games because of injuries to some and with only 13 players in the squad to begin with.
We had asked for one last big effort from everyone as some could hardly jog never mind run as the boys lined up for the biggest game in their young lives.

Husie I F are a professional club from Sweden and looked the part as they warmed up in their sponsored tracksuits before the game. Onto the match and the opening exchanges were fairly even with both teams trying to play football. Then disaster struck twice in a three minute spell when Husie scored 2 goals. Both times their front players showed Olympic standard sprinting as they outpaced our defence to score with classy finishing.
At this stage I feared a drubbing as 2-0 in any final will give a team confidence and take away all feeling of tiredness. To the team who concedes 2 quick goals there already tiredness multiplies tenfold. But this group of young boys from Greenisland are made of sterner stuff than that. Men amongst Men and somehow battled there way back into the game and started to let the ball do the work by passing it all over the pitch and using both flanks to try and get in behind their defence. Husie defended deeper and deeper as we started to get on top and had several corners but could not get the break through. Finally the pressure paid of when from 20 yards Matthew Stewart scored a left foot cracker to give the boys a lift. Only 3 minutes to go and tactics went out the window as our team shape was 2 - 3 5 with everyone getting into the box looking to get something onto a cross. The closest we came was with the last kick when Blaine hit a rocket from 18 yards which just grazed the crossbar. The final whistle blew and all the emotions came out as the boys had given every last drop of energy and were totally drained.
The tears that flowed showed how much the boys wanted to win but to all of us there to watch they where ALL winners. Never in my life will I witness a group of young boys who showed such professionalism, discipline both on and of the pitch, their good manners and respect that they show to others and above all else there willingness to listen and learn.
The Haarlem Easter Cup Final 2006.
Husie I F (Sweden) 2 1 Greenisland ( Northern Ireland )

The coach journey back was quiet until the beans started to kick in. Both Ricky and Matty Johnston breaking the mood in more ways than one. At least we could smell it, they were sitting in it ! Ha Ha. It was 8-30pm when we arrived back and a Chinese carry out was ordered by everyone as all 21 in the party crammed into Romayne and Jamsies wee house to enjoy the biggest helpings weve ever seen and a bit of craic also. We talked about going to Amsterdam on Monday as they may never see it again. Words that would come back to hunt us. A late night was had by all as the boys enjoyed the cycle karts ( local attraction) and some trying to chat up the local talent. Well some speak double Dutch at times anyway.
Monday 17th April,
Great another lie- in until 9am, well all accept Carol Stewart who got an early wake up call when the elephants sorry birds, landed on her roof to pick at the bread that was planted on Sunday night by her son along with Josh, Michael and Ricky . Sorry boys but you all got the blame. After breakfast the boys had 2 hours at the theme park and Ricky gave a tennis lesson to Matty T and Andrew Mitchell before we all walked to the bus stop. Then onward to the train station. The trains in Holland are excellent with an upstairs on them which is great for looking out especially as the country is so flat. A 30 minute journey into Amsterdam Central Station then a short walk to enjoy the local shops and shall we call it the local sites.
Who was it said boys hate shopping? Because they were in every shop along the street that lead to Dam Square. Im talking 3 hours here not a few minutes. Of course in Amsterdam there are shall we say? Other local attractions which you cannot miss ( sorry Romayne and Carol) as the boys enjoyed the dancing at the doorways of certain clubs along the streets. Or was it the lack of clothing the girls wore and this during the day! Yes we ushered everyone away , only to be told sure you said we may never be in Amsterdam again so can we not stay and watch. NO you cant after we took some video that is.

The most popular attraction in Amsterdam though was Keiths shaved head, which some boys not mentioning any names (Patrick) especially had great fun in rubbing. A day of leisure was had by all and a bit of team bonding which was good to see. At 7-30pm we travelled back to Wassenaar and enjoyed another Chinese banquet as everywhere else was closed being Easter Monday. Another late night after the suitcases etc were packed but again the boys behaved themselves as they had done throughout the trip and as said before they are a credit to their parents and to Greenisland Boys FC.

Tuesday 18th April,
Back to normal with the early starts as we had to clean out the houses and be ready for a 9-30am coach pickup before driving to the airport. The boys carried the runners up trophy from the Duingalows, onto the coach, inside the airport terminal then onto the aeroplane with great pride as if they were returning with the Champions League trophy itself. The flight departed at 12 noon and we arrived back into Belfast at 1-15pm all accept for Matthew Johnstons suitcase which took a wee bit longer. In fact this was the only problem that we had on the entire trip and thankfully it arrived 2 days later (better late than never).
Hopefully a great time was had by all the boys and on behalf of them can I thank
Jamsie and Romayne McIlroy, Carol Stewart, David Woods and Ronnie McKee for all the help that you gave us when we were away. Hopefully if we ever go away again you will return, and to all the boys I hope it was an experience that you will never forget and also give you the confidence knowing that when you played against the other teams from different countries that you were every bit as good. In fact lets be honest you were better than them with your technique and team play. From Colin, Keith and I we were proud of every single boy there.

The U11s and U13s arrive at their respective airports looking immaculate and a credit to their club and parents with the only problem being Boots must have sold out of hair product by the styles of the boys.

The teams proceeded to meet up at the John Lennon Airport in Liverpool where on meeting the coach proceeded to the Warrington Peace Centre. After the introduction and formalities the boys unpacked, had lunch and as planned the first training session took place at Crossfields where the boys were able to blow away the cobwebs of traveling and began to focus on the challenge they would face. Training over, the boys trundled back for their shower, tea and then the process of beginning to prepare for a night out at LA Bowling began and it took longer for the U11s to prepare than most young girls and their transformation and odour was more likened to Hair Traffic and Debenhams perfume counter, so Warrington beware, these boys meant business! The first challenge of the tour was to take place and the ten-pin bowling alley with the parents v coaches challenge and as always happens the Greenisland coaches (much to the dismay of Murray, Anderson & Co) triumphed emphatically even though a certain U13 manager proved a handicap to the eventual winners. A great night was had by all and even after spending all their money on the dodgems due to the young lady operator they left with not even so much as a phone number. The day then ended with an early night (ha ha!) in preparation for 2 games for each team the following day.
U13 Match Reports
The U13 after breakfast, looking excellent in their new training gear, spent 90 minutes on their preparation of corners and free kicks in poor conditions before watching the U11s first game and then came back to base for their pre-match meals in preparation for the 2 games which was to face them later on, even at this stage being aware of the very heavy condition the pitches were in.
GREENISLAND 2 GARSWOOD 0
GREENISLAND under 13s kicked of their first match of the tour in terrible conditions with the pitch being very heavy and wet. The boys started well and after adjusting to the conditions took the lead ten minutes into the match after a mix up in the defence led to Jonathan Montgomery giving the boys the lead. Both keepers where kept busy with the condition leading to mistakes by both teams. The second goal scored by Joe McAllister was as a result of a free kick inside the box after the keeper picked up a backpass. Half time came and all subs where used with another match due later on in the day. The second half continued in the pouring rain with chances at both ends, but alas no further goals. A good win to keep the traveling support happy.
GREENISLAND 7 CROSSFIELDS 0
The second game of the day and the weather was that bad the boys had to move onto the nearby rugby pitch and a quick football pitch marked out. The boys tried to play football throughout but soon the conditions dictated the football. Kieth Boyle scored the first two goals and The second came from excellent movement and Boyles quick feet stunned the keeper whom he rounded to score. Johnathan Montgomery was to blast four goals two either side of half time to set the boys on their way. Jason Burke then went up for a corner and timed his run to perfection heading a powerful header into the net. Both teams deserved a lot of credit for playing in such poor conditions.
Both teams enjoyed a lovely hot bath or shower and sat down to tea very happy with their respective sets of results and it was very evident to see both sets of boys were mixing extremely well and the banter and joking was of very high quality, with places on the pool or table-tennis tables very hard to acquire, with Skimmer remaining unbeaten for long periods of time on the table-tennis and Johnny Robinson on pool.
All the touring party walked over to Crossfields Clubhouse to watch the Northern Ireland v Poland and England v Azerbaijan World Cup Qualifiers on the big screen. The boys being outnumbered at least 26:1 certainly created an electric atmosphere with colorful renditions of Lawrie Sanchez Green and White army and were not Brazil were Northern Ireland and even though the results did no go their way on the night they never stopped entertaining and Northern Ireland certainly destroyed England that might vocally as had been the story at Old Trafford 5 days previous.
(The illness of Steekie caused grave concern for both his dad and the coaches at the beginning of the night and after spending a night in hospital, returned safely to us the next morning and again thanks to Jackie for all her help whilst awaiting on the ambulance).
The evening again ended on the pool and table-tennis tables and most players did go to bed early, whilst the coaching staff enjoyed peace and quiet for a cup of tea and time to analyse the days soccer, although after 2 hours some seemed to have had enough and retired to bed.
Thursday was to be a long and really enjoyable day as after breakfast and team meetings we made our way to Manchester. Much to the dismay of the Liverpool and Leeds supporters we had a great tour of Old Trafford and the museum then thanks to Jackie Evans, proceeded to the training ground of Manchester United at Carrington where we were met by Mr Bushel and Jackie Evans given a fantastic insight into the training programmes and facilities the club has and the boys were able to ask questions to both men and Corrie Evans on the Manchester United Academy and the qualities needed to be a professional footballer. Our thanks again to Mr. Bushel for waiting on our arrival and taking the time to meet us and show us around.
After a visit to McDonalds for refreshments and dinner the surprise for the boys was to go watch a Man Utd Res v Newcastle Utd Res with the unexpected prize of being within 10 meters of Sir Alex and meeting and collecting David Bellions autograph. Heart felt thanks again go to Jackie for being once again brilliant and proving to be a great ambassador for our club at Manchester United.
The boys had a wonderful time and after more table tennis and pool proceed to be and preparation for the big day of football ahead of them.
Finals day began with breakfast and team meetings and as the U11s prepared for early kick-offs it was off to their rooms for the U11s for rest to prepare for the two maters later on that day.
U11s Reports
Greenisland 2 Newtown FC 2
With
Crosfields pitch taking a batter over the past couplesof days a change of
venue was quickly arranged for the final games in this tournamentGreenisland's
opponents Newtown needing at least a draw to go through to the final. This
was a excellent game of football again end to end stuff,Newtown were creating
the better chances and took the lead on 10mins,0-1.Greenisland got
their equaliser on 16mins and it was Snoddy latching onto a lioose ball,1-1.Back
came Newtown and just before the half regained the lead,1-2. Into the second
half it was nip and tuck both defences were working extremely hard breaking
up attacks playing up to mid-field to set counter-attacks under way. Greenisland
got their equaliser and what a goal it was, Grant the left back hitting a
left foot volley top right corner of the net,2-2. Final Score, Greenisland
2 Newtown Town F.C. 2
Greenisland 2 Crossfields 0
After
some refreshments Greenisland's second game was against the host team Crosfield
who had just earlier played out a 2-2 draw with Newtown Town F.C. This was
a step up in quailty opposition for Greenisland and a very entertaining game
of football. In the first half both teams were evenly matched attacking and
defending both keepers were certainly kept on their toes Glendinning pulling
of some great saves to keep the game level but Greenisland broke the dead-lock
through their captain Micheal Ruddy following up an attack down the right
Duff putting over a cross Ruddy a fine left foot drive,1-0.Into the second-half
both teams were spreading the play were these players were finding the energy
was amazing, Greenisland had the pace of Anthony and McFall up front and this
pairing started to cause problems in the Crosfields defence.Snoddy was the
creator for Greenisland's second and final goal, winning the ball centre circle
area he drove forward going by one defender saw Anthony pull away into space
a perfect through ball to Anthony who raced clear of the defence invited the
keeper out went round him
right side and finished with his left foot,2-0. Carswood piled forward hitting
the post and crossbar but Greenisland held on to the whistle and had secured
their place in Fridays final. Final Score Greenisland 2 Carswood 0.
After a light lunch the U13s arrived at the re-arranged venue for their football very vibrant and looking forward to another challenge and after seeing the 11s beaten on penalties even more determination was evident on their warm-up.
GREENISLAND
6 EAST LEIGH 0
The 13s played their final league game in a swiftly rearranged venue against
East Leigh and the score line does not reflect the closeness of the game.
Although always on top the home team continued to push the boys all the way
and but for Connor Devlin in nets the score would have been a lot closer.
This was evident when Connor saved a penalty after a bit of bravado he dived
low to his right and saved well also holding on to the ball from the onrushing
attacker. Goals from Keith Boyle (2) Glen McAllister (2) Jonathan Montgomery
and a sweet strike from Karl Douglas completed the scoring. One goal by Boyle
and McAllister where top drawer and excellent turn and shots from ranger and
are more than worthy of note.
The Final
GREENISLAND 0 GARSWOOD 0 (GBFC won 5-4 on pens)
Greenisland met Garswood in the final and with both teams knowing each other from the first game the final was an evenly contested game with no quarter asked or given. Chances where few and far between and with no extra time the match had penalties written all over it and that is had it transpired. Up stepped Matthew Johnston, Stuart Anderson, Connor Devlin, and Luke Orr who all scored. It was then up to Darren Anderson who if he scored would give the boys the trophy. Darren slotted the ball hard and low passed the keeper to give the boys victory and after losing in three previous shootouts the boys deserved their moment.
Celebrations continued back to the Peace Centre where the celebratory lemonade flowed and then retreated to their rooms to groom themselves for the presentations to follow after tea.
Dressed in full club tracksuit bottoms and t-shirt (dont forget the hair products!) the boys looked fantastic as the prize giving began and continued to conduct themselves in a way to credit themselves further on this trip. Trophies were awarded and Skimmer and Glen McAllister received the players of the tournament accolades.
When the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress along with the guests finally left, the pool and table tennis challenges began.
The draws were made and both competitions got underway for the 11s and 13s. A certain manager of the U11s was determined much to the dismay of the U11 players to win the table-tennis which he did whereas the U13 manager lost in both finals (admitting to allowing the opposition victory ha ha!) The last evening then came to a close very late as everyone went to their rooms.
Packing completed and hovering finished the coach was then filled after breakfast and after saying our good-byes, the coach left at 10.00am for the Trafford centre.
Two hours was enough at the Trafford centre for the boys to spend all their money and buy presents they needed and after arriving safely at the airport, arrived home at 6.30pm safe and well.
The trip was a great success with the boys appearance, playing and conduct of the very highest quality and each boy should be proud of the way the represented Greenisland Boys. Our thanks go to everyone who contributed and helped to make this trip the success it was (special mention to Ian Wells Crossfields fc for all his effort despite all the weather could throw at him)
Football Festival for Peace 2005 Crossfields Fc Report
The Football Festival for Peace 2005 has been a success once again -despite
the rain on the Wednesday & the quick change of venue for the Friday football!
The Big Screen Night was well attended by Greenisland & Crosfields U12's.
And the Presentation Night was a success, with the Deputy Mayor & Mayoress
presenting the certificates to all the participating players & the medals
to the 2 winning teams - (Newton U12 & Greenisland U14). It was great
to see that Newton, East Leigh & Seneley & Garswood all came down
to the Presentation Night despite having some distance to travel - they were
extremely well represented & it was great that they all made the effort
to come & enjoy the Presentations. Many thanks to our Crosfields Under
12's & Under 14's players, coaches, team managers & supporters for
their exemplorary conduct during the tournament. Everyone was a credit to
the Club. Thank you to the coaches, team managers & parents for giving
up free time or taking time off work to be there for the players. Many thanks
to the U12's & U14's for recommending Newton & East Leigh Junior Football
Clubs, to participate in the Tournament - both Clubs were fantastic sports
as were Seneley & Garswood JFC & Greenisland Boys FC. We ask our age
groups participating to recommend Clubs they have enjoyed playing against,
as they support from the line in the right way, & this years choices wereexcellent.
Seneley & Garswood are a fantastic Club & were an automatic choice
as they have philosophies very similar to our own. A huge thank you to Steve
Birdsall (Under 15's) for all his help during
the Tournament on both the Wednesday & the Friday - Steve took time off
work to help during both days & his help was invaluable - so many thanks
to Steve
for everything. Many thanks to Harry Smith (U10's) for all his hard work on
the Friday setting up & refereeing all day. I suspect that Harry also
took time off
work to come down & help & once again shows his dedication to the
Club. Many thanks to Andy Wright (Referee) who officiated on both the Wednesday
& the Friday matches. Many thanks to Sue Freckleton (Girls U9/10) for
coming along on the Friday morning to help set up. I'd also like to thank
those who've worked extremely hard behind the scenes organising this tournament.
It has taken a great deal of time, work & effort to organise & host
this Tournament but the hard work paid off & the tournament ran smoothly.
And many thanks once again to Greenisland Boys & their team managers &
coaches & players & parents who've been great once again. It's great
to be involved in this Tournament & the Peace Initiative representing
Warrington. Greenisland are a great football Club, & they are lovely people
& we're honoured to be associated with them. We wish them all a safe journey
home & look forward to meeting up with them all again next year.
Preparation will start in a few months time for the 2006 Football Festival
for Peace Tournament & next seasons U12's & U14's will be taking part
in this tradition.

Munchkins at the Rosario Tournament
Sunday
4 April 2004.
Rosario Tournament
Last Sunday the munchkins of Greenisland Boys Club were invited to the Rosario
U9's tournament on the Ormeau Road Belfast. We meet before noon at Greenisland
to change. The sun was shining outside but we were unaware of the weather
conditions that lay ahead.
We had 10 boys, sorry PLAYERS in the squad, of which 7 were representing Greenisland
for the very first time. In fact some were playing in an organised match for
the very first time.
The 7 a-side tournament had 4 different age groups ranging from U7 to U10.
On arrival we registered before a Milk Cup style parade with all the teams
involved in the different age groups parading around the pitches. With proud
parents, family and friends looking on.
In our section there were 5 teams St Marks Boys Club from Dublin, Shorts Boys
Club from Belfast and 2 teams from Rosario Boys Club. We where on first match
after the parade against St Marks when the weather became more akin to Scott
Of The Antarctic than a spring day. With the wind reaching force 9 and nearby
trees being uprooted the toss of a coin became very important as each match
was played over 15 minutes straight with no changeover. Not only did we loose
the toss but against a team that was bigger and stronger we completely lost
are way in the opening 7 or 8 minutes going 2 nil down.
With the weather getting worse we where not so much worried about getting
the ball out of our own half as to whether we would loose some off our boys
in the blizzard that came on. Anyway back to the game and from playing like
lost sheep for 10 minutes we started to put a few passes together and even
got into there half which was no mean feat if you had have seen the weather
blowing into the boys faces. With the boys getting more confident after a
couple of strikes on goal we forgot about defending and St Marks scored again
in the last few minutes to make the final score 0-3.
On the plus side all 10 players got a taste of what to expect and got better
as the game went on. Well done to St Marks who by the way had 3 coach loads
off players and supporters up with their 3 teams. They all watched our game
so it was quite intimidating for some off our players. In fact some Irish
League teams would be glad at the size of crowds watching.
For our second game we moved to a different pitch which was far bigger and
suited us better with more space to play in. (The rest of the matches were
played here) We played Rosario Boys and the transformation was a sight to
behold, from wondering sheep to a team who looked like they had played together
for years. (Good Coaches) ha ha. Again we lost the toss and played into a
howling wind but such was our football this time you wouldn't have known.
Going forward the ball hardly left the ground and the boys kept their shape
better with their movement excellent for ones so young. For the record we
lost 2-0 I think (I was still drowling over the football played) that I hadn't
a clue what the score was, this time we created numerous chances and but for
good goalkeeping from the Rosario player we would have scored. Again all 10
players took part and ALL did well.
After surviving a hailstorm blizzard when all 10 players, family and friends
had to huddle behind 2 umbrellas we meet another team from Rosario . This
time we won the toss (Thanks Gavin) and had for the only time on the day the
wind behind us. The game started and the boys carried on where they left off
in the last game passing and moving to support each other. Regularly putting
3 and 4 passes together with some individual skills that would not have been
out of place in SERIE A. The Rosario keeper was recreating The Alamo as he
single handedly made save after save to deny Greenisland a victory. How the
game finished 0-0 was unbelievable, and could have been worse because in the
last minute Rosario finally got out off they're half to break away and only
for Nathan in goals who made a wonder save we would have lost.
We finished our tournament against Shorts who play in a league together so
this was going to be a good test. Into a stiff breeze we again played some
magnificent football putting together passes that was a joy to behold. Finally
we scored a goal just as everyone was beginning to think it wasn't to be,
through Kyle McKeown with a left foot shot that nearly ripped the net out.
Again there keeper made numerous saves to deny us another goal (Who takes
the shooting practice Gillsy) before Shorts who played very well themselves
went on to score in the last minute to earn a draw. All 10 players played
in all 4 games, which was the most important thing. The results didn't matter
one bit as long as the boys enjoyed themselves that's what it was for, and
for them to play against other boys clubs to see what they can expect when
they play in leagues, as they get older.
In closing to all the parents who stayed throughout in terrible conditions
to support the boys we thank you. To Rosario Boys Club for there warm words
off welcome at the opening ceremony and too all the referees who did a splendid
job. To the teams we played in a friendly and sporting manner we thank you
all. But mostly to ALL 10 boys who were representing Greenisland Boys Club
some for the first time you were a credit to your parents to the coaches and
Greenisland Boys Club with your attitude, discipline, appearance and your
performances, which started like a Robin Reliant and finished like a Ferrari.
Sunday 4th April will not be remembered for Millwall getting to their 1st
F A Cup final but for the boys who played in their first very own cup finals.
Well done boys you made us all proud!
The Squad - NATHAN STRANAGHAN (goalkeeper) TOM MAGEE, REECE GLENNDENNING, CONNOR McGRATH, CHRIS HOOD,
GAVIN RICHARDS, KYLE McKEOWN, ROSS HULL, JASON BEATTIE, JAMIE McCLAREN.
Under 12's Tour To Liverpool August 2003
Day 1
Greenisland
Boys under 12 team travelled to Liverpool on their much awaited trip on Thursday
18th August meeting up at the International airport. All the boys arrived on
time with id"s in hand ready to board the plane. With the flight on time
the boys landed at Liverpool. We were met by the coach driver(Tommy who was
excellent throughout)After arriving at the Hostel the boys settled in and
headed off for lunch. It was then back to the hostel for a team meeting and
a rest before the first match against St Margaret Mary's later in the evening. The
boys arrived and after inspecting the excellent pitch the boys warmed up.Captain
Stuart Anderson exchanged gifts and the match started. The first five minutes
the boys were a bit slow but soon woke up and Joe McAllister gave them the
lead after 7mins with a drilled home shot from just inside the box.The boys
added a second when big Joe rose to meet a cross from Glen Miskimmin. The boys
then missed a couple of great chances combined with excellent saves by the
keeper the score remained 2-0.The second half seen more fluent football from
the team and Matthew Johnston,James Dayand Ben Scroggie worked a nice triangle
with the latter slamming home the third. The Mags then pulled one back when
a deflected shot left Glen Bradshaw stranded.Stuart Anderson then fired home
a Beckham style free kick the first of a couple on tour. Ross Miskimmin then
tried to out do him when he hit a 20 yard curling shot which smashed of the
post. The match finished 4-1 and the boys where treated to some super hospitably
by the host club and where presented with a cup both teams were unaware they
were playing for.(Stuart Scroggie wants look). It was home to bed for tired
coaches and parents.
Day 2
The boys where up early and the coach loaded up and off to the theatre of
dreams(say some) and onto Birmingham City to play the Youth academy. The boys
arrived at Old Trafford for a tour and to spend some money(plenty of cheap
Beckhams shirts and only two European cups Dougie on display)It was back on
the coach and the drive down the motorway only to be held up in the biggest
traffic jam weve seen.Thankfully we arrived some two hours late but the chance
off playing a premiership side kept the boys happy.Birmingham proved to be
tostrong for the boys with everybody playing and giving 200% but the boys
struggled to keep up with the passing and movement. The match was played in
3x20min half's with Birmingham scoring a goal in the first two halves and
two in the last period.Special mention to Stuart Anderson,Matthew Johnston
and Glen Bradshaw who had particularly good games.Birmingham staff then had
words for the boys thanking us for the game and praising the boys on the way
they played. It was back on the coach and the two hour trip home.
Day 3
Saturday morning saw the super weather still with us and the boys headed for
a match against Netherley. The boys took onto the pitch some of the lessons
they learned from the night before and it wasn't long before the passing game
was creating chances for the forwards.Philip Gardnier opened the scoring and
goals from Glen Miskimmin and Matthew Johnston were to follow.A brace for
Karl Douglas before a reply for the home team was followed by another Stuart
Anderson free kick.Luke Orr was creating in the midfield and he set up Graig
McLaughlin for his first of the tour. The star of the show was James Day who
was to score four in total on the day.Stephen Murray kept things tight at
the back with Keith Boyle replacing Bradshaw in nets to give him a run out
wide right with Stuart Hamilton. The match ended and the boys headed off to
Ewood Park for the first off two premiership games.Blackburn ran out 5-1 winners
playing excellent football. The boys then received a treat when Davy Murray
arranged for the Wolves and England under21 keeper Matt Murray to meet them
afterwards along with Alex Rae.The boys where escorted to the Blackburn dugout
and Lorenzo Amoruso came out and signed and posed for numerous photographs. Also
Andy Todd of Blackburn obliged the boys and again outside when he posed for
a photograph with his daughter and the team in front off Sir Jack Walker statue. The
boys then descended on the clubs shop and a few Blackburn shirts where bought.A
real friendly club and if you are in the area we would strongly recommend
a visit. The boys then headed to Liverpool and out for a meal.
Day 4
The boys played final their game of the tour in Walton against SNAFC and again
start very brightly.Stuart Hamilton opens the scoring beating the offside
trap from just past thehalf way line.Darren Anderson then set up Craig McLaughlin
who was to go on a score a first half hat-trick.with three well struck shots
the last from the edge of the box.Murray then picked up the and found Orr
whose crossfield ball set McAllister free to score the first of his three
goals.James Day then completed the scoring and the boys could relax and enjoy
the rest of the tour.It was then off to Elland Road for Leeds and Newcastle
which ended 2-2 so the boys had seen 10 goals in two games. We then headed
back to Liverpool and out for a evening meal.A pool competition was then held
in the Hostel and was fiercely contested as any off the matches with Luke
Orr beating Joe McAllister in the final.(Bed at last)
Day 5
It was up and pack all the gear away and goodbye to the hostel before the
highlight of the trip ANFIELD here we come and a chance to see the trophy
room if we had time due to its size(four European cups 30 odd league championships
endless cups ill stop utd men cause I know your jealous)Time was near up and
we would have to head for the airport but before we left Heaven did I see
Dougie come out of the shop with a Liverpool bag?It was then home and time
to say goodbye to the boys who played and behaved in the way Greenisland BoysFC
should throughout.A dvd of the tour will soon be given to the boys thanks
to Warren Anderson who clicked away all tour.

There were a lot of new hair styles, spiked, highlights with loads of gel. Chris (Gareth Gates) Getty took top prize. Ian (Aqua Massage) McClean had his normal Number 2 all over. Ryan (Steve Davies) Whiteside had a Number 2 all over and Colin (don't touch my hair) Corry's Barnet hadn't changed.
09:45 a.m.
After booking in we went to the departure lounge, the boys fuelled up with sweets, crisps, soft drinks and pasta for the journey ahead. Colin Corry was very excited as this was his first time flying.
11:40 a.m.
As the plane began to taxi back, Colin's face turned ashen and he was heard to remark, "does the plane not go forward to take off". The journey lasted 45 minutes.
12:25 p.m.
We arrived in Birmingham greeted by a downpour of rain. We boarded our bus, which was hired from Dunn Line, our driver Mick was very helpful giving us information about Nottingham and safe places to take the boys to relax and have fun. Notts County, Bradford City and Preston North End have used the bus we were travelling on as a First Team Coach.
2:00 p.m.
Arrived
at Hotel. Premier Lodge was going to be our base for the next 3 days. Situated
close to the city and right on the Trent River, everyone was pleased with
the location. Rooms were clean, spacious with shower and toilet facilities.

Back at the hotel we had a short meeting with the players on tonight's game, Pelican Colts F.C. were the opposition. Kick off 6:30 p.m.
Match Report
The
first match of Greenisland Boys U15's trip to Nottingham was against a very
good local youth club side, Pelican, who have not lost a game in two seasons.
In the opening minutes Pelican were doing all the attacking with Greenisland
standing firm with the back four coping well with Robert McChlone and Colin
Sewell in fine form. Greenisland started to settle down and play good football
especially in midfield with most moves coming through Dominic Melly and Aaron
Holland. But after 15 minutes Pelican took the lead, a cross from the right
was well controlled by their striker before he fired home an unstoppable shot
pass Greenisland keeper Stephen Cummings. This seemed to spark Greenisland
into action and they started to play more attacking football, which eventually
brought an equaliser. A great run down the right from Dominic Melly ended
with a superb cross into the middle of the goalmouth where Andrew Roy easily
smashed the ball passed the Pelican keeper into the corner of the net. After
this goal it was all Greenisland and before long they scored the second. Again
it was a cross from the right this time from Chris Reynolds and again Andrew
Roy was on hand at the far post to slot the ball home. The first half ended
with no more scoring. In the second half Greenisland replaced some players
to give others a game. This disrupted the shape of the team slightly. The
game was more evenly contested with Pelican creating some chances. But these
were either missed or saved by keeper Stephen Cummings. Greenisland had chances
on the counter attack but the Pelican keeper saved shots from Chris Dillon
and Alan Kerby. The match was so evenly contested but Greenisland held on
to their lead to win two goals to one. An excellent win considering the opposition,
Pelican Youth Club had not been beaten in two years.
Day 4 - 27 May 2003
8:00 a.m.
Breakfast
9:00 a.m.
Briefing for today's game against Warve a Belgium Academy U17 side. Kick off 10:30.
Match Report
The second match of Greenisland Boys U15's trip to Nottingham was very competitive against a strong Belgium side Warve, who had brought over a squad of 24 players. This without a doubt was a real test for Greenisland and they started really well against the Warve U16's. they played great football putting the Belgians under pressure. The Belgians also did not like the controlled aggressive football Greenisland were playing. It came as no surprise when Greenisland Boys took the lead. A great through ball by Chris Getty split the Belgium defence for Dominic Melly to run through to curl a great shot pass the Warve keeper. Warve had chances but found keeper Stephen Cummings in fine form. The first half ended with no further scoring. The second half saw the Belgians bring on their U17 side. It was no surprise to find that Greenisland came under constant pressure because of the strength of the opposition. They equalised with a first time shot through a crowd of players into the corner of the net. Within 10 minutes they took the lead. A free kick was awarded outside the penalty area; a Warve midfield player took the free kick and placed his shot wide of the Greenisland keeper into the roof of the net. The Belgians were in control but somehow Greenisland Boys found that extra competitive spirit and started to get back into the match. They started to create chances and Dominic Melly was so close to equalising only a goal line clearance denied him. Headers from Robert McChlone and Chris Getty came very close also. The Belgians held on to their lead and came away with a 2 - 1 win. But credit must go to all the Greenisland Boys players for putting on a great performance against older opposition.
12:30 p.m.
Back at the hotel packing was under way for our journey home.
2:30 p.m.
Our final presentation was made to the management and staff of the Premier Lodge Hotel. To make the presentation we called on Jos (Del Boy) Roy. Jos thanked the staff for their help and advice during our stay. A box of thornton's chocolates was presented.
3:00 p.m.
Boys went back up to Laser Quest for an individual competition. Winner - Andrew Roy
5:40 p.m.
Departed for the Airport.
The behaviour over all was impeccable. The football, the Boys were professional in every aspect, they were a credit to their parents, the coaching staff and Greenisland Boys Football Club.

James Boyle Memorial 7 A-Side Tournament
Saturday
the 23rd of June 2001 saw Greenisland Boys Football Club send two U15 squads
to Coleraine to compete for the James Boyle Memorial 7-a-side Shield. The
party of 22 players and officials left Greenisland at 9.00am to make the journey
to Rugby Avenue, Coleraine, where they would battle it out with 6 other teams
in a 2 groups of 4 format. Having thought long and hard regarding
team selection, the coaching staff were confident that each squad, namely
Greenisland Boys and Greenisland Boys Club would give
a good account of themselves both on and off the pitch. The draw
dictated that each of the Greenisland sides would play in separate groups,
each group containing three other teams. The initial group matches would be
played on a league basis, with the winners of each group playing the runners
up of the other, and vice versa, in the semi-final
stage.
Group 1
The
Boys started their campaign in winning fashion with a 2-0 victory
over Triangle F.C, goals coming from Chris Graham and Chris Bell. Match 2
turned into a different story, when a more physical and up for itRiada
side took
the initiative and claimed a 1-0 win over a Greenisland side who clearly where
not concentrating on the job in hand. Results from other matches in the group
now dictated that a victory in the final league fixture would guarantee runners
up position in Group 1.This was achieved with a resounding 3-0 defeat of a
gallant Dunsevrick side, goals coming from Chris Graham (2) and Mark Foster.
With a semi-final place now guaranteed, the Boys could now weigh
up their possible opponents from Group 2.
The
Boys Robbie Frew, Aaron Douglas, Mark Foster, Paul Hughes, David
Crawford, Chris Bell, Chris Graham, Chris Reynolds.
Group 2
The
Boys Club began their road for stardom in a more subdued manner,
with a 0-0 draw against East End. Plenty of possession and opportunities was
not transformed into goals in a match that was very much there for the taking.
After some soul searching they returned with a vengeance in Match 2, securing
a 2-0 win over Star Utd, goals coming from Craig Magee (2). Other scores from
Group 2 matches where certainly favouring the Boys Club, and as
it turned out, victory in their final match would see them claim top position
in Group 2. A goal apiece from Robin Millar and Craig Magee against
Armoy ensured the top spot, which now meant a semi-final showdown with the
Boyswould take place!!!
The
Boys Club Neil McKnight, Andy Phillips, Wallace Nelson, Craig
Magee,
Aaron Pegg, Jonathan Crawford, Robin Millar, Paul McKimm.
Semi-finals
The
first semi-final between Riada and Star Utd was a close affair, with the victory
for Riada only coming after a penalty shootout. The scene was now set for
either of the Greenisland sides to stake their claim for a place in the final.
Whatever happened in this match, there was the consolation that at least one
squad would be representing Greenisland in the contest for the Shield. The
match as expected, was a tight and tactical affair, with both teams attempting
to create openings that would unlock either defence. Andy Phillips and his
opposite number Aaron Douglas where keeping tight reins on the centre forwards
of the respective sides, with neither offering any space in their defensive
areas. In the end it took a second half strike from Chris
Graham to secure a place in the final for The Boys, and an opportunity
for them to overturn their only defeat of the day against the strong Riada
side.
Special thanks to the Boys Club for a very competitive match.
Final
The final of any competition will always be a difficult affair, and this match
was no exception. Having already tasted defeat at the hands of Riada, the
Boys were determined not to suffer the same fate twice. Everyone
agreed that the team had not performed and done themselves justice in their
previous encounter, and prior to kick-off you sensed more self-belief, confidence
and determination from each member of the squad. As it turned out, this was
a final where the team performed as a unit, stood up and gave as good as they
got, and played football in the style that everyone knew they were capable
of. The victory was assured with another Chris Graham strike, but credit must
go to every one of the eight players who made this possible.
Special Thanks.
We would like to thank Peter Morrow (Coleraine Soccer School) and his team
for the invitation to compete in what was a well-organised and competitive
tournament. We trust that our close links with our friends in Coleraine will
continue with success and friendship for many years to come. We would thank
all the other Clubs, who in taking part, ensured that the competition was
successful in bringing together young footballers from different communities,
to compete against each other and enjoy the game of football.
Congratulations
Congratulations to Chris Graham on his award of Player of the tournament.
Over the course of the tournament, it was evident that his ability in front
of goal (5 goals in 5 matches) would be a deciding factor in important fixtures.
We must also give credit to Chris Reynolds and Neil McKnight, who where both
playing in an age group which was one year in advance of their own. It must
be said that both players coped more than adequately and indeed contributed
to the overall success of both teams. A special Endeavour award
was made to Stephen Campbell (Dunsevrick), who in the eyes of the Greenisland
Coaches, added a little something to the matches in which he took
part. We wish Stephen and his team-mates all the best for the season to come.
Final thanks go to our Transport Director Jimmy Graham for the
organising of the Minibus, and to Big Jeff, who handled defeat in the semi-final
with a lot of dignity!!!! He was last seen over at the Dog Show trying to
sign 2 Labradors and a Jack Russell !
